Unveiling of the Panay War Memorial: Jaro Public Plaza, Iloilo City on February 2, 1981
To commemorate the epic struggle of the freedom-loving fighters of Panay and Romblon during the painful years of the Second World War in this part of the Pacific, a war memorial is erected on the beautiful plaza of Jaro, a district of the city of Iloilo.
This historic edifice symbolizes the spirit and substance of the noble and heroic movement which set aflame the hearts of men and women who ignored uncertainties, inconveniences, and even death in the name of love of country and democracy. Their names are now legend. Their patriotic deeds are now part of history.
The people of this region highly appreciates what the war veterans, their widows and orphans, have done in order to erect this war memorial specially the Greater Manila Chapter of the 6th Military District. Jaro is a very logical site for this memorial. Major encounters between the enemy forces and those of the 6th Military District were had at the outskirts of this district across the Jaro River.
(from the message of former Iloilo Governor Conrado J. Norada)
