<text>Dengue cases surge to 1,294 in Iloilo with 5 fatalities
By Panay News -Thursday, June 27, 2024

ILOILO – The province has reported a sharp increase in dengue cases, with 1,294 infections and five deaths recorded from January 1 to June 22 this year.

The latest data showed a 79 percent rise compared to the same period last year, which saw 723 cases.

In just the week from June 15 to 22, the province registered 115 new cases spread across several towns. The breakdown of these new cases includes Lambunao (10), Oton (six), and Badiangan (six), among others, contributing significantly to the surge.

Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, causing severe flu-like symptoms and, in extreme cases, death.
Symptoms include a sudden high fever of 104 Fahrenheit degrees, severe headache, nausea or persistent vomiting, swollen glands, muscle and joint pain, pain behind the eyes, and red spots or patches on the skin.

The municipalities with the highest incidence of dengue this year are Lambunao, reporting 88 cases with one fatality, followed by Passi City with 69 cases, and Oton with 67 cases.

Particularly concerning are Badiangan and Miag-ao, which have recorded multiple deaths.

A cluster of cases has been identified in 14 barangays, including San Antonio in Ajuy and Poblacion in Badiangan, indicating localized outbreaks.

The most affected age groups are children one to 10 years old, with 535 cases, and adolescents 11 to 20 years old, with 371 cases.

Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, head of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO), emphasized the importance of the 4S strategy against dengue, which includes searching and destroying mosquito-breeding sites, wearing protective clothing, seeking early treatment, and supporting strategic fogging in hotspot areas.

Quiñon specifically urged the public to eliminate breeding grounds, especially during the rainy season when stagnant water can become a common breeding site for mosquitoes.

She also called for active community participation in cleanliness drives under the Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD) initiative.

Furthermore, Quiñon reiterated the need for parents to seek immediate medical attention if their children exhibit fever for more than two days, to promptly determine if it is dengue.

Here’s the complete breakdown of the 115 new dengue cases: Lambunao (10), Oton (six), Passi City (two), Miag-ao (two), Badiangan (six), Calinog (five), Lemery (five), Estancia (three), Dumangas (four), Ajuy (nine), Dingle (eight), Sara (three), Janiuay (five), Banate (three), Pavia (one), Leon (one), Carles (one), San Dionisio (two), San Joaquin (four), Balasan (one), Santa Barbara (four), Cabatuan (six), Barotac Viejo (two), Tigbauan (one), Barotac Nuevo (two), Maasin (five), Igbaras (one), Alimodian (three), Batad (one), Leganes (one), Mina (two), Anilao (two), Dueñas (one), Guimbal (one), Pototan (two), San Miguel (one), and San Rafael (two).

Meanwhile, here are the 10 towns that recorded the most dengue cases since January: Lambunao with 88 cases with one death, Passi City (69), Oton (67), Badiangan (62 cases with two deaths), Calinog (61), Miag-ao (55 cases with two deaths), Lemery (51), Estancia (43), Dumangad (41), and Ajuy (40).
On the other hand, the 14 barangays with clustering of cases are:

* San Antonio, Ajuy – three
* Poblacion, Badiangan – three
* Odiongan, Badiagan – nine
* Astorga, Badiangan – six
* Sianon, Badiangan – three
* Sinuagan, Badiangan – three
* Libertad, Banate – three

              <text>Dengue clusters surge in Iloilo; 39 brgys in 20 towns affected
By Ime Sornito -Thursday, July 3, 2025

ILOILO — The number of barangays with confirmed clustering of dengue cases in Iloilo Province surged by 70 percent in just one week, raising alarms over the fast-spreading mosquito-borne disease.

From 23 barangays in 14 municipalities last week, the latest data from the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) as of June 28 (26th morbidity week) show that 39 barangays in 20 towns have now recorded dengue clusters — defined as having at least three cases in a barangay over a four-week period.

“This is a significant increase,” aid IPHO chief Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon.

The towns with confirmed clustering include:

* Ajuy – Poblacion (four)

* Alimodian – Poblacion (three)

* Barotac Nuevo – Lagubang (three), Monpon (three), and Salihid (three)

* Barotac Viejo – Vista Alegre (five)

* Bingawan – Poblacion (four)

* Cabatuan – Tabucan (three) and Tiring (three)

* Calinog – Libot (four)

* Carles – Cabilao Pequeño (four)

* Concepcion – Poblacion (three)

* Dumangas – Bolilao (four), Paloc Sool (five), Bacong (three), Ilaya 2rd (five), and Cayos (four)

* Janiuay – Jibolo (four)

* Lambunao – Poblacion Ilawod (three)

* Leganes – Poblacion (three) and Napnud (three)

* Lemery – Poblacion SE Zone (three)

* Leon – Biri Sur (five), Poblacion (five), and Talacuan (four)

* Oton – Buray (three), Santa Rita (three), Batuan Ilaud (10), and Caboloan Sur (three)

* Pavia – Balabag (three), Jibao-an (three), Pagsanga-an (three), Tigum (three), and Ungka II (three)

* Pototan – Barasan (three), Igang (four), and Guibuangan (three)

* Santa Barbara – Zone VI (three)

* Sara – Devera (three)

Dr. Quiñon renewed her appeal to residents not to tire of practicing preventive measures, including the “4S” strategy (Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, Secure self-protection, Seek early consultation, Support fogging in hot spots) and the “4Ts” (Taob or turn containers upside down, Taktak or empty water-holding vessels, Tuyo or dry water-collecting surfaces, and Takip or cover water storage units).

Each household is urged to conduct weekly search-and-destroy operations to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.

“Please, let us not get tired of doing the 4S and checking for mosquito habitats not just outside but also inside our homes,” she stressed.

Those experiencing fever and other dengue symptoms such as palanuka (vomiting), bleeding, and on-and-off fever are advised to immediately seek medical help. Severe dengue can be fatal if left unmanaged.

Dengue is caused by a virus transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. Its symptoms include sudden high fever, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, skin rashes, and bleeding. There is no specific treatment, and early medical intervention is critical.

As of June 28, Iloilo Province has recorded 2,511 dengue cases with 10 deaths, a 58 percent increase from the 1,586 cases and five deaths recorded during the same period last year.

Topping the list of municipalities with the most cases are:

* San Joaquin (172)

* Oton (160 with one death)

* Dumangas (132)

* Leon (127)

* Cabatuan (114)

* Pototan (107 with two deaths)

* Lambunao (99 with one death)

* Janiuay (90)

* Calinog (83)

* Pavia (79)

The disease has now reached all 42 towns and the component city of Passi.

Other areas with dengue cases are: Ajuy (78), San Dionisio (76), Barotac Nuevo (75), Sara (74 cases with one death), Passi City (60), Maasin (58), Barotac Viejo (56), Concepcion (55), Tigbauan (54 cases with one death), Carles (52 cases with two deaths), Santa Barbara (52), Banate (49), Estancia (44), San Miguel (44), Alimodian (40), San Rafael (38), Miag-ao (37), Guimbal (32), Batad (31), Mina (31), Badiangan (30), Dingle (30), Balasan (29 cases with one death), Leganes (28), Anilao (27), Dueñas (27 cases with one death), Lemery (26), Zarraga (26), Bingawan (23), Igbaras (20), San Enrique (19), Tubungan (19), and New Lucena (10)./PN

              <text>Dengue infections surge by 130% in Iloilo; more towns report clustering of cases

By Ime Sornito -Wednesday, July 24, 2024

ILOILO – A surge in dengue fever cases has been reported across the province, with 31 of its 43 municipalities, including Passi City, experiencing clusters of cases, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) confirmed.

In the recent update covering the 28th morbidity week of 2024, the province has witnessed a dramatic 130% increase in dengue cases compared to the same period last year, with figures rising from 893 to 2,053 cases and five fatalities.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing severe flu-like symptoms and potentially life-threatening complications.

During just one week, from July 6 to July 13, the province reported 348 new cases.

Passi City leads with the highest number at 40, followed by Dumangas (26), Dingle (17), Calinog (16), and Janiuay (11).

Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, head of the IPHO, expressed particular concern over the increase in barangays with clustered cases, now totalling 79 across the province.

In response to the escalating situation, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) passed a resolution mandating all barangays to implement the “Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue” (ABKD) initiative, involving local communities in efforts to eradicate mosquito breeding sites, especially during the rainy season.

Quiñon also urged schools in affected areas to conduct indoor residual spraying to protect students as classes are set to resume on July 29.

She stressed that dengue is non-discriminatory in terms of age, affecting all groups, though predominantly those under 20 years old.

Despite the rising cases, Quiñon clarified that the province is still below the alert and epidemic thresholds.

To reach the alert threshold, Iloilo would need to report 1,257 new cases by the end of the 28th morbidity week, while 1,840 cases would push it into the epidemic threshold.

The alert threshold serves as an early warning system, whereas the epidemic threshold requires an urgent health response.

Here are the 10 municipalities with the highest dengue cases since January: Passi City (137), Lambunao (130 cases with one death), Badiangan (97 cases with two deaths), Calinog (97), Oton (88), Dumangas (81), Dingle (71), Miag-ao (66 cases with two deaths), Lemery (65), and Janiuay (63 cases).

The others which also reported cases were: Barotac Nuevo (61), Ajuy (57), Cabatuan (57), Sara (56), Leon (53), Pavia (50), Pototan (50), San Dionisio (47), Banate (46), Barotac Viejo (45), Estancia (45), Tigbauan (45), Santa Barbara (44), Alimodian (40), San Joaquin (35), Maasin (35), Igbaras (34), Mina (33), Carles (31), Balasan (30), Dueñas (30), Concepcion (28), Batad (26), Anilao (24), Bingawan (22), Zarraga (22), Leganes (21), San Miguel (21), San Enrique (20), Guimbal (18), Tubungan (13), San Rafael (10), and New Lucena (five).</text>

              <text>Four towns in Iloilo province—Oton, Passi City, Tigbauan, and Miagao—have declared a state of calamity due to a dengue outbreak. The entire province has also been placed under a dengue outbreak and is on blue alert status.

Oton was the latest town to declare a state of calamity after the Sangguniang Bayan approved the request of Mayor Sofronio Fusin Jr. Oton Vice Mayor Jose Neil Olivares announced the decision on social media, citing the alarming rise in dengue cases.

According to data from the Provincial Health Office (PHO), Oton recorded 223 dengue cases from January 1 to August 10, 2024. This marks a significant 248 percent increase compared to the 64 cases reported during the same period in 2023.

In just one week, from August 4 to 10, the town logged 58 new cases.

Passi City was the first to declare a state of calamity on August 9, following a special session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod. The city has reported 327 dengue cases, including one fatality, as of August 8.

Tigbauan, with 117 recorded cases, and Miagao, with 128 cases, including two deaths, have also declared a state of calamity.

Meanwhile, the Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (IPDRRMC) passed a resolution on August 15 recommending the entire province be placed under a state of calamity.

The resolution will be deliberated in the upcoming regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on August 20.

A province-wide declaration of a state of calamity would enable the mobilization of resources and the implementation of more comprehensive measures to address the outbreak.

As of August 10, Iloilo province has reported 4,595 dengue cases and 10 fatalities since the start of the year, marking a 320 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023, which saw 1,095 cases and one death.

Out of 43 local government units (LGUs) in the province, 41 have breached the epidemic threshold, with 268 barangays experiencing clusters of dengue cases.

Meanwhile, Governor Arthur R. Defensor Jr. signed Executive Order No. 174 on Friday, declaring a heightened response to the recent surge in dengue cases across the province.</text>

              <text>DENGUE SURVEILLANCE: Iloilo escalates outbreak containment measures

Residents of Lambunao, Iloilo joined the cleanup drive against dengue initiated by the town’s Sangguniang Kabataan Federation on Thursday, August 15. SK FEDERATION OF LAMBUNAO PHOTOS

ILOILO – In response to the sharp increase in dengue cases here, Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. ordered the escalation of measures to manage the outbreak. He stressed the importance of surveillance.

Dengue surveillance shall be strengthened to immediately detect and respond to clusters or any unusual increase in cases,” said Defensor.
In Executive Order No. 174, the governor stated that all cases that will fit any of the dengue standard case definitions should be reported through each municipality’s Epidemic Prone Disease Surveillance System – Information System.

What are these standard case definitions?

* suspected case – a previously well person with acute febrile illness of two to seven days duration plus two of the following: headache, body malaise, myalgia, arthralgia, retro-orbital pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flushed skin, rash and herman sign.

* probable case – a suspect case plus any of the following: leucopenia as per a complete blood count or dengue NS1, antigen test or dengue IgM antibody test.

* confirmed case – positive result from any of the following: viral culture isolations or polymerase chain reaction.
Data from the Iloilo Provincial Health Office indicates a surge in dengue cases, with a total of 4,595 reported as of August 10, 2024, including 10 fatalities. This represents a 320 percent increase compared to the same period last year, which recorded 1,095 cases and one death.

The rise in cases prompted the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) to recommend declaring the province under a state of calamity. This recommendation was made during a special meeting held at the Casa Real de Iloilo last Thursday.

In his executive order, Defensor clarified that City/Municipal Health Officers have the mandate to declare an outbreak. But they must take into consideration the necessary data before declaring an outbreak, to wit:

* case trends of the disease in the LGU over the last five years, including hospitalization, severity, and mortality trends. The years where there were identified dengue epidemic/s should not be included in computing the thresholds
* results of epidemiological (descriptive or analytic), environmental, and laboratory investigation of cases
* capacity of the health system to provide health care or public health interventions in response to the disease.

For his part, Cornelio Salinas, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said the province met the criteria set by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) for such a declaration.

The criteria include an extremely high incidence of a disease and the impact of the disease on multiple municipalities or cities.

Currently, three municipalities — Passi City, Miag-ao, and Tigbauan — have declared their areas under a state of calamity, while Badiangan has officially declared a dengue outbreak.

Defensor also stressed the importance of screening and diagnosis. He said local government units (LGUs) shall encourage early treatment-seeking behavior using the “seek early consultation” strategy for early clinical case detection, diagnosis and management.

All suspected dengue cases shall be test with dengue NS1 Rapid Diagnostic Test, or dengue NS1 Ag+ IgC and IgM RDT.

If the laboratory result shows positive from dengue, the patient must be classified according to the severity as stated in the Department of Health’s (DOH) Administrative Order 2012-006 or Revised Dengue Clinical Case Management.
There are three classifications of dengue severity:

* dengue without warning signs – a previously well person with acute febrile illness of two to seven days duration plus two of the following: headache, body malaise, myalgia, arthalgia, retro-orbital, and pain.

* dengue with warning signs – a previously well person with acute febrile illness of two to seven days duration plus two of the following: abdominal pain or tenderness, persistent vomiting, clinical signs and accumulation, liver enlargement, and mucodal bleeding.

* severe dengue – a previously well person with acute febrile illness of two to seven days duration plus two of the following: severe plasma and leakage leading to shock, severe bleeding, kidneys or renal failure.

Defensor ordered the establishment of dengue fast lanes to facilitate faster access of dengue patients to consultations.

What else does Executive Order No. 174 mandate?

* LGUs shall implement legislation on the enhanced 4S strategy, re-activation of Local Dengue Task Force and Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue, and collaboration with various stakeholders for dengue response.

* LGUs shall mobilize households and communities for search-and-destroy mosquito breeding sites activities.

* Communities and schools shall search for all water-holding containers and other breeding sites of mosquitoes to be destroyed every 4 p.m. at least once a week (in consideration of the life cycle of mosquitoes); this shall be called the “4 o’clock habit”.

* Insecticide-treated nets shall be installed in schools, rural health units, dengue wards and other health facilities.

* In areas with clustering of dengue cases, schools shall temporarily suspend the wearing of prescribed school uniform and encourage learners to wear light-colored long sleeves and trousers to minimize their risk of mosquito bites.

* LGUs shall conduct dengue vector surveillance activities, including identifying major breeding sites and destroying them, monitoring high-risk areas based on vector population using aedes vector surveillance, and monitoring fluctuations in the vector population.

* LGUs shall conduct larviciding and space spraying in barangays declared as hotspots, having a clustering of cases, or when there is an outbreak or an impending outbreak.

ILOILO – The Department of Education (DepEd) – Schools Division of Iloilo, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are set to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to bolster the anti-drug campaign across public schools in the province.

This initiative aligns with the vision of Schools Division Superintendent Ernesto Servillon Jr., who advocates for a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal drugs in schools, following the recent recovery of a plastic sachet of suspected shabu from a 16-year-old male student in Janiuay town.

In a recent meeting, representatives from DepEd-Iloilo, PDEA-Region 6, and PNP discussed the implementation of programs aimed at preventing student involvement in illegal drug activities.

As part of the agreement, PDEA will conduct a “training of trainers” for selected teachers and school heads to ensure the widespread dissemination of drug prevention information.

Servillon explained, “The training will enable our educators to further instruct other teachers and students, promoting a strong anti-drug stance within our educational environments.”

The PNP plans to integrate a special module into the Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) subject for students from Grade 7 to Grade 10.

The module will cover various topics including prevention strategies and the detrimental health effects of drug use.

DepEd-Iloilo’s role in this collaboration will focus on scheduling the “training of trainers” and ensuring the seamless integration of the PNP’s module into the existing curriculum. The full implementation of these plans is targeted for October, post-MOA signing.

“We aim to begin in October because I see the urgency,” said Servillon.

He has also tasked the Division Drug Watch Committee with crafting a schedule for the training sessions to ensure a timely start.

Additionally, Servillon emphasized the importance of conducting any related law enforcement activities, such as buy-bust operations involving students, outside school premises to safeguard the mental health of the learners and avoid disrupting their education.

Since September 27, 2023, DepEd has ramped up its anti-drug initiatives by implementing a banner program titled “Bwas Damlag Amligan, Droga Likawan” as part of enhancing the National Drug Education Program, specifically the “Barkada Kontra Droga” project, which includes various activities designed to steer students away from drugs.

Servillon has also organized Drug Watch Committees in all secondary schools to monitor drug-related activities and coordinate with agencies like the PNP and PDEA to maintain a drug-free school environment./PN

Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel, the Department of Public Works and Highways - Region 6 director, gives an update on the P187.54-billion mega Panay-Guimaras-Negros bridges project. PIA-6

ILOILO City – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 is optimistic that consultants will submit the detailed engineering design (DED) for Section A of the Panay-Guimaras-Negros Bridges by December 2024.

As of September 28, 2024, the actual completion of the DED for Section A, being handled by Yooshin Engineering Company and Dasan Consultants, stands at 54.73 percent.

DPWH-6 director Engr. Sanny Boy Oropel said Section A of the project spans 13.636 kilometers, while Section B, which connects Guimaras to Negros, extends 19.470 kilometers.

Oropel noted that the procurement process for Section A is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2025, with construction or civil works expected to begin in the second half of 2025.

“The expected start of the project is in the second semester of 2025 for Section A, and it is projected to be completed by June 2028,” said Oropel.

He added that by June 2028, both Ilonggos and Guimarasnons could start enjoying the benefits of the bridge, especially during the 2029 Manggahan Festival.

For Section B, which involves the Guimaras-Negros Bridge, the DED is expected to be submitted by December 2025.

However, actual construction for Section B may not begin until after 2028, with no specific timeline yet for procurement and civil works.

The Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridges project, a highly anticipated infrastructure development, has an estimated total investment of nearly P170 billion.

The Panay-Guimaras section, or Section A, is projected to cost P57 billion, while the Guimaras-Negros section, or Section B, is estimated at P109.8 billion.

This project is seen as a game-changer for inter-island connectivity, significantly improving regional transportation and the local economy.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan previously approved the consultancy services contract for this flagship project. Yooshin Engineering Corporation, in partnership with Kyong-Ho Engineering and Architects Co., Ltd., Dohwa Engineering Co., Ltd., Soosung Engineering Co., Ltd., and Dasan Consultants Co., Ltd., is handling the DED.

Earlier this year, consultants met with the Iloilo provincial government and presented the project timeline and description to Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, representing Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.

The project involves constructing 32.47 kilometers of sea-crossing bridges, connecting roads, and interchanges, linking Panay Island to Guimaras Island, and Guimaras Island to Negros Island.

Section A, the Panay-Guimaras segment, will span 13.004 kilometers, while Section B, the Guimaras-Negros segment, will cover 19.47 kilometers.

The design phase for the project runs from December 2023 to June 2026, with a total estimated project cost of P187.54 billion.

Section A will connect Leganes, Panay, to Buenavista, Guimaras, while Section B will link San Lorenzo, Guimaras, to Pulupandan, Negros Occidental.

Key features of Section A include:

* Approach roads (Panay and Guimaras) – 8.03 kilometers

* Approach Bridge 1 – 3.24 kilometers

* Main Bridge – 1.4 kilometers

* Approach Bridge 2 – 0.33 kilometers

For Section B, the features include:

* Approach roads (Guimaras and Negros) – 6.36 kilometers

* Approach Bridge 1 – 7.2 kilometers

* Main Bridge – 1.4 kilometers

* Approach Bridge 2 – 4.51 kilometers

The Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island Bridges project is aligned with the Philippine National Development Strategy, aiming to provide safer, faster, and more convenient transportation between the islands, reducing travel time from three to four hours to less than one hour./PN

              <text>Dinagyang ILOmination tribes to bring special performances to Iloilo Food Festival
By Ma. Theresa Ladiao -Tuesday, January 20, 2026

ILOmination, one of the major highlights of this year’s Dinagyang Festival, is scheduled on January 23 at 5 p.m. It features Dinagyang warriors in glowing costumes. ILOILO CITY MAYOR’S OFFICE PHOTO

ILOILO City — Foodies at the Iloilo Food Festival will get an added treat as participating tribes of the Dinagyang ILOmination contest stage a special performance on Saturday evening, January 24, bringing the energy of the light festival closer to diners and visitors.

Mayor Raisa Treñas said she requested the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI) to mount a short but dynamic presentation for food festival patrons.

“We want everyone enjoying our local cuisine to also experience the color, movement, and excitement of ILOmination,” Treñas said, adding that the activity highlights how Dinagyang continues to innovate while remaining inclusive and accessible to the public.

The special performance will be staged on a 360-degree setup, with the platform positioned at the center and surrounded by food kiosks and activity areas, allowing spectators to view the show from all angles.

Treñas said the interactive layout is meant to enhance the overall festival experience, blending food, culture, and performance into one immersive event.

“We want people to feel the festival, to be part of it — whether they come for the food, the lights, or the performances,” she said.

Dinagyang ILOmination, one of the major highlights of this year’s festival, is scheduled on January 23 at 5 p.m.

The illuminated parade will start at Atria, pass through SM City Iloilo, and end at Iloilo Business Park (Megaworld), featuring five competing light festival contingents from across the country.

Contingents are local illumination tribes, joined by guest contingents including the Pandang Gitab Festival of Lights of Oriental Mindoro, Bana-ag Festival of Anilao in Iloilo, PAVVURULUN AFI Festival of Tuguegarao City, and Zamboanga Hermosa of Zamboanga City.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, a special lion and dragon dance performance by the Iloilo Cultural Federation Inc. will also be staged in celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year./PN

              <text>DISEASE DEFENSE: Western Visayas bolsters animal border security vs Q Fever
By Ime Sornito -Tuesday, June 25, 2024

ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture (DA) has expanded its animal border protocols across Western Visayas following the threat posed by Query (Q) fever.

This decision by DA Region 6 follows the confirmation by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) that the country recorded its first cases of Q fever in imported goats from the United States last week.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by the Coxiella burnetii bacteria, primarily affecting cattle, sheep, and goats. It is transmissible to humans through contact with infected animals or exposure to their excreta or body and birthing fluids.

In humans, Q fever can cause chills, fever, and muscle pain and may lead to severe liver and heart complications if untreated.

Despite no current reports of Q fever in Western Visayas, which affects both domestic ruminants and humans, the DA-6 has strengthened its animal border controls. It is working closely with local government units (LGUs) and BAI personnel to safeguard the local ruminant industry.

An advisory issued by the DA-6 in its Facebook page this Monday urged the public to remain vigilant but reassured them of the region’s current Q fever-free status.

Stakeholders are encouraged to practice strict biosecurity measures, report any unusual animal deaths or abortions to their respective veterinary or agriculture offices for proper assessment and control.

The Regional Animal Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL) is prepared to diagnose a variety of animal diseases, including parasitism, Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE), pneumonia, and gastrointestinal issues.

“The Department is on full alert and ready to implement all necessary measures to maintain our status as a Q fever-free region,” added the DA-6 statement.

Region 6 contributes significantly to the national goat inventory, with 376,312 heads, making up 9.66 percent of the total.

In a recent press conference, Dr. Christian Daquigan, officer-in-charge of the BAI National Veterinary Quarantine Services Division, reported that 19 samples from imported goats tested positive for Q fever.

These goats, intended for a farmer dispersal program, were depopulated in secluded farms in Pampanga and Marinduque to prevent the spread of the infection.

In total, 94 imported goats were condemned as a precaution.

Daquigan emphasized that the BAI is actively tracing potentially infected animals to contain the disease and prevent further outbreaks. The agency has not recorded any major outbreaks and is conducting extensive surveillance in the affected areas.

DA Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa announced that a fact-finding team has been formed to investigate the situation further.

He also mentioned that a temporary importation ban on goats from the US would soon be issued until the source of the infection is fully traced.

He disclosed that the imported goats arrived in the Philippines last January and underwent mandatory testing, which confirmed the Q fever in February and subsequently in June after further testing.

Meanwhile, Daquigan assured that the meat and milk from local goats are safe for consumption, provided they are properly cooked and pasteurized, especially in light of the increasing popularity of goat’s milk.

The Department of Health (DOH) reiterated that human-to-human transmission of Q fever is rare, and the disease is generally mild and treatable with antibiotics.

It advised the public to avoid contact with animals suspected of carrying Q fever and to seek medical consultation if exposure is suspected.

DOH explained that symptoms in humans develop within two to three weeks after exposure and are commonly non-specific and mild. These include fever, fatigue, headache, cough, nausea and vomiting. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency)/PN
