He was a distinguished patriot and eminent figure in Philippine history. He was the son of Lucas Avanceña and Petra Quisay. Amando married Locsin Consing and was the father of three sons: Jose, Alberto, and Jesus. He attended the Seminario de Jaro for his elementary and secondary education and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran. He later entered the University of Santo Tomas, where he obtained the title of “Licenciado en Jurisprudencia.” Amando Avanceña was a notable Filipino lawyer and politician. He represented the first district of Iloilo in the Philippine Assembly and served as the sixth governor of Iloilo Province from 1914 to 1916 under American Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison. Furthermore, Amando Avanceña served as the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines and was a legal adviser to the Federal State of the Visayas, the revolutionary government of the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, and Antique. He was chosen to negotiate with American forces on Panay during the Philippine–American War. During the revolution, he founded the “Comité Conspirado,” whose main objective was to drive the Spaniards out of Panay and the neighboring Visayas Islands. In addition to that, Avanceña established the “Instituto de Ensenanza Libre,” a school in Molo that provided education and academic opportunities for the local population. During the American Colonial Era, Amando Avanceña was appointed as an assistant attorney in the Bureau of Justice. In 1905, he became an auxiliary judge. He served as the Attorney General of the Philippines from 1914 until 1917, when he was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Following the death of Manuel Araullo in 1924, he succeeded him as Chief Justice, although he had to wait until 1925 for his formal appointment. Additionally, he served as a judge-at-large for the provinces of Surigao, Iligan, and Dapitan. He enacted significant laws related to commerce, industry, and agriculture.
