<text>CAAP BOOSTS ILOILO AIRPORT SECURITY: Another knife incident must not happen again – exec
By Ime Sornito -Wednesday, February 4, 2026

Additional security personnel are now deployed at the Iloilo International Airport. “So that at any given time there would be quick reaction in case a passenger or whoever becomes unruly,” says Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines - Iloilo terminal supervisor Arthur Parreño.

ILOILO — Security at the Iloilo International Airport has been tightened following a knife and shooting incident on January 28, with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) assuring the public that a repeat of the incident will not be allowed to happen.

CAAP–Iloilo terminal supervisor Arthur Parreño said security reinforcements were ordered immediately after an emergency meeting among airport security stakeholders to plug vulnerabilities and strengthen response protocols.

Among the key measures was the deployment of additional personnel from the Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP), including an active-duty police officer now stationed beside the X-ray machine on the airport’s third floor for quick response to unruly passengers or threats.

“So that at any given time there would be quick reaction in case a passenger or whoever becomes unruly,” Parreño told Panay News.

Security was also reinforced on the ground floor, with the CAAP Security and Intelligence Service (SIS) assigning additional personnel to conduct initial checks, including identity and ticket verification and passenger profiling.

The airport’s third-party security provider added more guards, particularly on the third floor, while the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) and the Cabatuan Municipal Police Station deployed teams to conduct regular patrols within the airport compound.

Despite the January 28 incident where an unruly man with a knife was shot and arrested by responding policemen, Parreño said airport operations remain normal.

“Undeniably, the passengers were the most vulnerable. There was a little trauma. Kita n’yo naman sa video. But again that’s normal kay siempre there was a knife, may lagsanay, and there was gunfire,” he said.

“With additional security personnel, we would like to assure the public that similar incidents or scenarios won’t happen again,” Parreño added.

Ground-floor screening under review

Calls to restore initial security screening at the airport’s ground-floor entrance cannot be acted on immediately, Parreño said, noting that the issue requires consultation among security stakeholders after the investigation is completed.

He stressed that the transfer of the X-ray screening area to the third floor last year was ordered by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and cannot be overridden by CAAP.

The operation and maintenance of X-ray machines, he added, fall under the Office of Transportation Security (OTS), a separate government agency.

“So we really have to sit down, talk to them, consider the result of the investigation. That’s the time we can come up with a good suggestion, recommendation, after a risk assessment,” Parreño said.

As of press time, no official investigation results have been released by the IPPO, Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6), CAAP, OTS, and AVSEGROUP, delaying any policy changes on airport security screening.

Parreño said no timeline has been set for the release of the findings.

“It’s a very delicate matter kay at stake ang the safety and security,” he said./PN
