<text>NIPAH ALERT: Iloilo health office urges strict food safety, vigilance as virus threat looms
By Ime Sornito -Tuesday, February 3, 2026

ILOILO — Amid heightened regional concern over the deadly Nipah virus, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) has issued a public health advisory urging Ilonggo families to strictly observe food safety, hygiene, and early consultation protocols. Prevention remains the only defense against a virus with no licensed treatment or vaccine, it stressed.

The IPHO reminded the public to consistently practice the 3S protocol as part of efforts to prevent possible transmission:

* scrub and wash fruits and vegetables

* stay away from sick animals

* seek medical advice when experiencing severe fever or respiratory symptoms.

Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease carried by fruit bats and pigs and can be transmitted from animals to humans, and in some cases, from human to human.

Health authorities said infection may occur through direct contact with the blood, urine, or bodily fluids of infected fruit bats or pigs, or by consuming food contaminated by these fluids, such as fruits and palm sap.

Those infected may experience fever, headache, sore throat, vomiting, and general weakness.

The IPHO emphasized that there is still no licensed treatment or vaccine for the Nipah virus.

“Gani, gina-encourage ta ang tanan nga mag-obserba sang mga prevention and isolation protocols,” the IPHO said.

Among the key prevention measures outlined were protecting fruits near homes from bats, discarding fruits contaminated by bats, wearing protective equipment when handling pigs or horses, avoiding direct contact with bats in areas where they naturally reside, and immediately consulting healthcare providers after exposure to animals or if symptoms appear.

Caregivers of possibly exposed individuals were also advised to wear protective equipment and practice proper hand hygiene.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) assured the public that no Nipah virus cases have been recorded in the Philippines and that safeguards are in place as preparations continue.

Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said the Philippines, along with Thailand and Taiwan, is intensifying border health measures to prevent the virus from entering the country.

“For the record, wala tayong namo-monitor or nakikita na may sintomas o history ng exposure…Ang India ang nagsabi, na ang kumpirmado lang nila ay dalawang kaso… Ang kanilang contact tracing at isolation ay nakaabot na ng halos 200 kung saan lahat ay nag-test ng negative… Sa pananaw ng India, contained na ito,” Domingo said in an interview over Super Radyo dzBB.

He added: “Ito ba ay makakalipat sa ibang bansa, ‘yan ang pinaghahandaan natin ngayon.”

Domingo said trained nurses are stationed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to monitor arriving passengers for symptoms, using thermal cameras capable of detecting elevated body temperature. Incoming travelers are also required to complete e-Travel documents within 72 hours to track recent travel history.

He urged the public not to panic if symptoms appear.

“Hindi ibig sabihin na basta may lagnat, may ubo, baka Nipah ito–hindi po… Kung kayo naman ay hindi bumibiyahe at wala naman kayong nakasalamuha na galing sa labas ng bansa, baka ibang sakit ‘yan…[Para malaman kung positibo sa Nipah virus]. Titignan ang medical history, ikaw ba ay bumiyahe sa ibang bansa, nakasalamuha ang mga paniki o iba pang hayop sa gubat,” Domingo said.

Despite the absence of a vaccine, the DOH official said the virus can be effectively contained from a public health standpoint, noting that DOH hospitals and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa City have isolation rooms ready.

Domingo also encouraged the public to maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and observe discipline to strengthen resistance against illness./PN
