<text>loilo City is not just a “city of love” but also a city that boasts the mouthwatering flavors of its ingenious food creations, such as Lapaz Batchoy, Pancit Molo, kansi, and many more.

This is all more true after being designated a “Creative City of Gastronomy” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Creative Cities Network.

“I am very happy for the recent wins of the city […] These awards are results of teamwork of our hardworking city officials and employees and consultants,” Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said in a statement.

He added that the recognition is seen to boost the tourism sector and bring about the discovery of other food dishes in the city.

The recognition makes it the first City of Gastronomy in the country and its third UNESCO Creative City. It follows Baguio City for Crafts and Folk Arts in 2017 and Cebu City for Design in 2019.

Iloilo City is one of the 55 cities around the world that recently joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, following their designation announced by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay during the World Cities Day on October 31.

There are currently 350 cities in more than one hundred countries, representing seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music.

Having sought this title for the past two years, Treñas previously emphasized the city had been a food hub for tourists all around the world.

“It is now time to showcase Ilonggo cuisine, and be recognized in the prestigious UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy,” he said.

UNESCO noted that the designation of the creative cities shows “their strong commitment to harnessing culture and creativity as part of their development strategies, and displaying innovative practices in human-centered urban planning.”

“The cities in our Creative Cities Network are leading the way when it comes to enhancing access to culture and galvanizing the power of creativity for urban resilience and development,” UNESCO Director-General Azoulay added.

Aside from Iloilo, UNESCO also named Chaozhou in China, Fribourg in Switzerland, Gangneung in South Korea, Heraklion in Greece, and Nkongsamba in Cameroon in the Creative Cities of Gastronomy list.

Iloilo now joined the ranks of 350 cities in more than 100 countries listed on the UCCN in the creative fields of crafts and folk arts, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts and music.

Iloilo City began its bid to be designated UCCN’s Creative City of Gastronomy in 2021.

In May 2023, Iloilo City announced that it is the country’s official candidate for UCCN in the field of gastronomy.

Iloilo City’s bid has also strong backing from the Department of Tourism.

The distinction is seen to form part of the campaign to boost the city’s tourism industry.

Iloilo City, a significant trading center in Panay, is known for its mouthwatering cuisines and delicacies influenced by diverse cultures. There’s the ever-famous La Paz Batchoy, Pancit Molo and biscocho.

Aside from being known as a gastronomic hotspot, Iloilo City is also famous for its world-class Dinagyang Festival and Paraw Regatta.

By Panay News -Wednesday, July 24, 2024

BY JB CERBAS

ILOILO City – The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) seized approximately P235 million worth of illegal drugs from 1,208 operations across Western Visayas in the first half of this year.

From January to June, different police units confiscated 34,297 grams of shabu with an estimated street value of P233 million and 20,200 grams of marijuana valued at P2.4 million.

PRO-6 data also showed that 1,600 drug suspects were arrested.

Here is the breakdown of the number of arrests per police unit:

* Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (PPO) – 593

* Iloilo City Police Office (CPO) – 300

* Iloilo PPO – 270

* Bacolod CPO – 205

* Regional Police Drug Enforcement Unit 6 – 72

* Capiz PPO – 67

* Aklan PPO – 39

* Antique PPO and Guimaras PPO – 27 each

Brigadier General Jack Wanky, PRO-6 director, commended the police units and likewise emphasized the crucial role played by local government units, communities, and other stakeholders in providing vital information for the success of the campaign against illegal drugs.

“May the number of arrests serve as a stern warning to those who still engage in the illegal drugs trade to stop and surrender to authorities. If you opt to continue in your illegal activity, surely you will end up in jail,” Wanky added.</text>

MANILA – Kaya Futbol Club-Iloilo capped off its championship run in the 2024 Philippines Football League with a 3-0 beating of Loyola Meralco Sparks FC on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Mar Diano, Simone Rota, and Jovin Bedic converted a goal each as the back-to-back PFL champions finished the season with a league-leading 40 points on 13 victories and a draw.

“Siyempre ‘yung goal naman talaga is makuha ‘yung PFL championship then nag-play kami as a team, together,” Kaya-Iloilo veteran Marwin Angeles said in a post-game interview.

Kaya-Iloilo opened the scoring in the 28th minute as Diano weaved through the traffic to convert from close range following a corner kick from South Korean forward Lee Dok-yung.

Three minutes from Diano’s conversion, Rota doubled the advantage for the Iloilo City-based football club as he knocked down a header from a curling pass by Jhan Jesus Melliza.

Kaya-Iloilo widened the lead further just before the halftime break as team captain Bedic drilled one from close range after Melliza slotted the ball to him inside the penalty box.

Rota, who was hobbled by injury almost the entire tournament, said he was glad that Kaya-Iloilo was able to complete a perfect season ahead of the football club’s international campaign.

“I was not able to play most of the games this season because I am injured, I am happy that I was able to help the team win today,” Rota said during his Player of the Game interview.

“Because we promised to ourselves that we have to finish strong, that is our mentality because not too far we will go to another tournament and we want to keep this winning mentality,” he added.

Loyola Meralco Sparks capped their season at eighth place with 16 points on five wins, one draw, and eight losses./PN

CEBU City – Anilao Central Elementary School, representing Western Visayas, emerged as gold medal winners in the elementary boys baseball event of the 2024 Palarong Pambansa here.

The Region 6 squad claimed Anilao’s first-ever Palaro baseball gold following a tight 5-4 victory over CALABARZON in the championship game held on Tuesday at the Filinvest City di Mare.

Jonas Dionela stepped up for Western Visayas to be awarded Most Valuable Player, Homerun King, Runs Batted In (RBI Kings) and Most Stolen Base, while Kim Cupan was named Best Pitcher.

Also part of the squad were Mark Leanns Rapista, AJ Aragona, Christian Dale Silva, Rieven Dalida, JM Dumadiego, Isaiah Joshua Galarpe, Brent Andrei Belgira, Gab Judah Marl Loste, Mike Navigar, and Ryn Michael Delmo.

Anilao had a perfect elimination round campaign as they scored a 12-0 victory over CARAGA squad before pulling of lopsided victories over CARAA (7-2) and EVRAA (13-2).

The Western Visayas representatives got challenge in the quarterfinals round against Region 1, which they defeated with a score of 12-8, before repeating over EVRAA in the semifinals.

Nathalie Ann Debuque, the mayor of Anilao town in Iloilo province, said the gold medal feat was a special moment for her town as they fell short of winning the Palaro baseball gold before.

“In a remarkable and unprecedented accomplishment, Anilao has won its first-ever gold medal in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa Baseball Elementary (Little League) marking a momentous occasion in our town’s history,” Debuque said in a Facebook Post.

“This historic victory was achieved because of the outstanding skills, determination, and sportsmanship of our team to bring home the gold to our beloved town,” added the mayor.

“This first-ever gold medal of Anilao in the Palarong Pambansa and first in Western Visayas in the field of Baseball is not only a testament to the talent and determination of our players but also serves as an inspiration to all aspiring athletes in our town. It is a reminder that with hard work, dedication, and community support, anything is possible,” she further said./PN

CEBU City – Barotac Nuevo Central Elementary School, representing Western Visayas, salvaged a bronze medal finish in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa elementary boys football event here.

The Ilonggo squad made sure to land a podium finish, scoring a dominant 4-0 victory over the Bicol Region in the battle-for-bronze medal game held at the Don Bosco Technical College.

Among the players of the Western Visayas squad were Bryan Ejar, Fritz Azhryl Chavez, Ezekiel Joan Surmieda, Khyhlle Anthore Yu, Devon Cris Torres, Luke Gabriel Derotas, Geric Matthew Jimena, and Carl John Betco.

Also in the squad were Andrex Quinn Martinez, Nijel James Cagampang, Jashan Myar Unipa, Jhan Ryan Matillano, Lemuel Hervas Jr., Nhelro Valderama, Nyel Zano Eribal, Edrian Manos, and Marvin John Lestingio.

The Western Visayas elementary boys booters were handled by coaches Samson Flores Jr., Ariel Bedic, and Nigel Montaño.

Meanwhile, Tañon Maroons-San Carlos City, which represents Western Visayas secondary boys football squad, failed to sustain their strong start to suffer a 3-2 loss to National Capital Region in the finals at the Dynamic Herb Sports Complex in Cebu City.

The Francis Roy Bacuna-mentored Negrense booters had a strong start as they quickly nailed two goals in the opening half, but NCR responded with two goals of their own for a 2-2 score.

The Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws-represented NCR then completed their victory in the extra time as they knocked down the go-ahead goal past the Western Visayas’ defense.

Despite the defeat, Bacuna remained optimistic with his squad as they managed to reach all the way to the championship round despite facing tough opponents along the way.

“This is a huge achievement for us because we did not expect to reach this far,” Bacuna said. “But this gives us the confidence to try and win the gold medal in the next Palarong Pambansa.”/PN

MANILA – In his third State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. highlighted two major infrastructure projects poised to transform the energy and agricultural sectors in Western Visayas.

The completion of the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) backbone project and the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project-Stage II (JRMP-II) mega dam in Calinog, Iloilo were presented as crucial developments in ensuring regional stability and growth.

Cebu-Negros-Panay Backbone Project: Averting Power Outages

The recently completed CNP backbone project has played a critical role in preventing power outages on Panay Island, particularly noted during a period from April to June when other parts of the country faced significant power shortages.

“This project has successfully averted blackouts in Panay Island during critical periods of yellow and red alerts in the region,” said President Marcos.

The P67.9-billion project enhances the power transmission reliability across the islands of Cebu, Negros, and Panay, facilitating energy transfers and accommodating new power plant developments in the Visayas grid.

President Marcos said the transmission line is “one of the critical achievements” of his administration since he was able to fulfill the vision of a unified Philippine grid that was conceived in the 1980s.

“Energy sharing and transfers between, among, and within the three island groups have now been made possible,” President Marcos said. “This is a defining moment not only for the power sector but for the entire country.”

In April, the President led the ceremonial energization of the CNP 230-kV Backbone Project in Bacolod City, a project that he described then as “a big step” to address the power supply problems plaguing most especially Panay Island.

The P67.9-billion CNP 230-kV Backbone Project, composed of CNP1, CNP2, CNP3 and Negros-Panay Interconnection Project Line 2 (NPIP L2), is intended to strengthen the grid and improve the reliability of power transmission in the islands of Cebu, Negros and Panay.

It involved the construction of a high-voltage transmission line and associated substations to connect the islands of Cebu, Negros, and Panay.

The energized CPN project will allow the increased transfer capacity among Cebu, Negros, and Panay islands and the dispatch of excess capacities from Mindanao to meet the demand in the Visayas grid.

It will also accommodate the development of new power plants in the Visayas grid.

Jalaur River Multipurpose Project-Stage II: Ensuring Water Security

Meanwhile, the JRMP-II mega dam project represents a significant leap toward securing water resources for agriculture and local communities.

“With the Jalaur project, nearly 32,000 hectares of land will be irrigated, ensuring water security, especially in underserved areas,” Marcos emphasized.

This P20-billion initiative not only supports irrigation over 31,840 hectares benefitting around 25,000 farmers but also contributes to the energy sector by generating 6.6 megawatts of hydroelectric power.

The project, currently 75.51 percent complete, is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

The July 16 inauguration by the President of the JRMP II water reservoir project, the largest outside Luzon, is a full-circle moment for the Marcos administration, taking place more than 40 years after the completion of its first stage in 1982, during the time of the President’s father, the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr.

JRMP II has three key components: irrigation development, environmental and watershed management, and institutional development.

A portion of the water from the high dam’s reservoir will be utilized to supply the commercial and industrial bulk water requirements of Iloilo City and nearby municipalities.

The project is also expected to generate 6.6 megawatts of hydroelectric power, which will help supplement the power supply on the Island of Panay./PN
