<text>Iloilo City, the first in the Philippines to be designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, continues to bolster its reputation as a culinary destination with the launch of Coca-Cola Foodmarks.

The event, held at Festive Walk Iloilo on August 9, marked the second Coca-Cola Foodmarks location in the country, following its debut in Binondo, Manila.

Running from August 9-10 and August 16-17, the Coca-Cola Foodmarks campaign features food festivals highlighting the best of Ilonggo cuisine, perfectly paired with the refreshing taste of Coca-Cola.

Pablo Medina, Senior Director for Franchise Operations at Coca-Cola Philippines, emphasized the campaign’s focus on celebrating Iloilo’s rich gastronomic heritage.

“This is not just a food festival,” Medina said. “It’s a celebration of Iloilo’s culinary heritage, where families bond over La Paz batchoy, friends toast over sizzling platters of kansi [Ilonggo sour soup made with beef shanks and green jackfruit, flavored with batwan or bilimbi], and communities come together to celebrate the harvest with hearty feasts. And an ice-cold Coca-Cola drink? It’s the perfect note to complete an unforgettable gastronomic adventure.”

The launch event included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, attended by Coca-Cola executives and local officials, including Executive Assistant to the Mayor Jay Treñas, representing Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.

Treñas expressed the city’s full support for the partnership, highlighting its role in promoting Iloilo as a hub of culinary innovation.

“This gastronomic collaboration with Coca-Cola Philippines is not only a celebration of Iloilo’s culinary diversity but also a promotion of our local food industry. We are proud to further Iloilo City’s status as a hub of culinary innovation, complemented by the perfect partner: ice-cold Coke,” he said.

The Coca-Cola Foodmarks experience in Iloilo invites food enthusiasts to explore a culinary treasure map of the city, featuring recognized establishments such as Balay Bisaya Batchoy, Jeara’s Tinu-Om, Kap Ising Pancit Molo, and Mat-Mat Talabahan.

The campaign aims to create special moments for families and the community while showcasing Iloilo’s gastronomic treasures.

Coca-Cola Philippines plans to expand the Foodmarks campaign to more cities across the country, continuing its mission to celebrate and promote the diverse culinary landscapes of the Philippines.</text>

<text>ILOILO – The Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) is set to deploy additional medical personnel to Badiangan town this week to address rising dengue cases, particularly in Barangay Odiongan which recorded 15 cases and two fatalities last week.

Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, IPHO head, emphasized the need to focus on case management. More doctors and medical technologists will support existing efforts, especially in accommodating individuals seeking consultations.

While a team was sent to Barangay Odiongan last week, its services were limited to Tuesday through Thursday. Quiñon emphasized the need for a daily medical team presence to ensure comprehensive care.

“Just to ensure nobody will be missed,” Quiñon told Panay News.

Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, chief of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office, says the deployed medical team will remain in Barangay Odiongan, Badiangan until there are no more reported dengue cases. ILOILO PROVINCIAL HEALTH OFFICE PHOTO
Dengue can be life-threatening and typically manifests with a sudden high fever reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit, accompanied by at least two of the following symptoms: severe headache, persistent nausea or vomiting, swollen glands, muscle and joint pains, pain behind the eyes, and red spots or patches on the skin.

The medical team from IPHO will remain in Barangay Odiongan until there are no more reported cases of dengue.

On June 6, an IPHO team visited Badiangan, specifically Barangay Odiongan, to conduct site inspection in response to the clustering of dengue cases there.

The dengue virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, and a person can be infected with dengue multiple times.

Dengue mosquitoes are day-biting and thrive and reproduce in clean, stagnant water.

Quiñon urged the community to join the 4S strategy against dengue: search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, take self-protection measures, seek early treatment, and support fogging or spraying in hotspot areas.

“Please cooperate. Many mosquitoes are now infected with dengue, and your family could be next,” Quiñon said.

She also encouraged everyone in Badiangan, especially in Barangay Odiongan, to wear protective clothing to avoid mosquito bites and to visit health facilities if any signs or symptoms of dengue appear.

Also on June 6, Mayor Suzette Mamon issued Executive Order (EO) No. 040, which mandates a massive anti-dengue drive throughout the municipality.

Here are the specific orders in the EO:

* for Punong Barangays to mobilize a clean-up drive on individual households with close supervision by members of Barangay Councils, Barangay Health Workers, and other volunteer workers, in coordination with the Municipal Health Office through the midwives assigned in the area.

* for Punong Barangays to activate the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in the conduct of the said activities.

* The Municipal Health Office Team lead by the Municipal Health Officer, together with the midwife assigned in the clustered barangay, Barangays Health Workers, Day Care Workers, and other volunteer workers must conduct sanitary health inspection and dengue symptoms monitoring in households.

* Misting for individual households will be conducted both to contain the spread of dengue cases and as a preventive measure. Fogging of specific areas will be done, provided social preparation and health protocols shall be strictly complied.

* Community and household clean-up shall be conducted continuously at 4 p.m. every Friday under the close monitoring of the respective Punong Barangays, and the Municipal Health Office through the Sanitary Inspector and Midwife assigned to clustered barangay/s.

Badiangan declared a dengue outbreak on May 30 due to the sharp rise cases. As of last week, it recorded 37 cases with two deaths.</text>

<text>Concepcion set to host 142-MW solar farm; Visayas seen to get electricity supply boost
By Neljoy N. Galigao -Saturday, January 24, 2026
ILOILO — Northern Iloilo’s push for renewable energy is gaining momentum.

Developers confirmed that a 142-megawatt solar power project in the municipality of Concepcion is moving toward construction this year, positioning the town as a major contributor to the Visayas power grid.

The large-scale solar farm, being developed by MGen Renewable Energy Inc. in partnership with Saudi-based ACWA Power, is expected to break ground within the next six to eight months following recent site visits and consultations with provincial and local government officials.

Project proponents have already secured about 150 hectares of land at the foothills of Mt. Apitong, covering selected areas in barangays Loong and Nipa.

Once completed, the facility will have a designed capacity of 142.10 megawatts, making it one of the largest solar installations planned in northern Iloilo.

The project is seen as a significant boost to the Visayas electricity supply amid rising demand for cleaner and more sustainable power sources.

In a report released by the Concepcion municipal government, local officials said the solar farm is expected to deliver several benefits to the town, including job generation during the construction phase, increased local revenues from taxes, and stronger positioning of Concepcion as a renewable energy hub in the province.

“During construction, priority will be given to hiring local residents, both skilled and unskilled,” the report said, noting that the project could help improve employment opportunities in the municipality.

The municipal government also expects the project to generate substantial tax revenues that can be channeled into public services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, while helping reduce the town’s carbon footprint.

At present, MGen is completing regulatory requirements and final logistical preparations to ensure the smooth rollout of the project, which is slated to rise at the foothills of Mt. Apitong in the coming months.

Local officials said the planned solar farm underscores Concepcion’s growing role in Iloilo’s transition toward clean and sustainable energy./PN

<text>Last July 5, Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art raised the curtains of Hulot Gallery to showcase an eclectic collection of artworks, the result of a coming together of two galleries: Puluy-an Art Gallery from Oton, Iloilo and Eskinita Art Farm from Batangas.

Established by Ilonggo artist Melvin Guirhem and his wife, Recheal Olivares Guirhem, Puluy-an Art Gallery is an artist-run hub, showcasing works by local painters and artistes. Since its opening in 2022, it has become a hive where creator and viewer meet in common appreciation of the Ilonggo aesthetic, in all its various forms and projections. Running along similar lines, Eskinita Art Farm parallels this premise with gallery owner Alfredo Esquillo’s advocacy of providing an alternative art platform where the artist is continually involved in the growth and evolution of local (contemporary) art.

Not for the first time did this artistic exchange – aptly named ‘Bayluhanay’ – link regional artists in an aesthetic repartee through various art forms. For this year, ‘Katawhan’ bridges this divide.

Essentially, the exhibit explores the age-old idea of art as a mirror to the human condition. In the canvases once more are reiterated the enduring queries of what it means to be human and what defines that humanity. But beyond meaning and definition, the exhibit likewise highlights the visual corporeality seen in the artwork: the idea of katawhan (humanity, in Hiligaynon) and its relation to katawan (body, in Tagalog), as observed by art writer Janine Dimaranan.

Throughout the collection, the media used transcend their essence as objects and transform into refractors of the body and the self: though the artists’ interpretations vary, they nonetheless explain – or attempt to explain – their understanding of their world, even as the audience tries to participate by bringing with them as well their personal experiences and in looking at the imagery, try to find shared encounters that bring out what are essentially human and humane in the artworks.

In her wall-text for the exhibit, Dimaranan reinforces the idea of the corpus ‘as the only vessel from which being is possible’, thus becoming the base from which we relate to the world. Seen through the artworks, these relational connections dive into the sundry contexts of the artists: while the gallery becomes a sanctuary for the contemplation of the artistic self, it also operates as a shared space where regional zeitgeist meet, acknowledge, and respect aesthetic differences and similarities.

This corporeality is projected in the variations of the human figure, as seen on the canvases of Job Hablo, Khervin John Gallandez, John Paul Castillo, Khyle Columna, Pamela Maceda, Jecko Magallon, Jack de Castro, Bry Barrios, Kevin Vila, and Brando Banga. Situated in various poses, the immobile bodies exude personalities: entities becoming identities, albeit the absence of names.

Complementing this imagery of the self is the fragmentation and distortion of identities, as faces are twisted and contorted in the artworks of Jan Michael Tauro, Edmar Colmo, Rai Cruz, Melvin Guirhem, and Kim dela Cruz. If one is to question what is human in the disfigurement of the human face, then perhaps the audience is called to contemplate the brokenness of our natures.

Similarly, the symbolic-archetypal projection of selfhood as seen in the works of Anthony Victoria, Kyle Francis Dile, Renwil Portodo, Ioannis Sicuya, Rick Sapio, Genavee Lazaro, and Alfredo Esquillo echoes the same sentiment and comes full circle to the title of the exhibit, endowing it with a gravitas that aspires to the philosophical and the psychoanalytic.

In retrospect, the same quintessential questions about our humanity surface from the collection: What truly makes us human? What magnifies or diminishes our humanity? How do the flawedness and frailty of our beings define our humanity? How do our Selves relate to the Other? How do our communities contribute to our sense of self?

In the journeying through the ‘semantic web’ of visual articulation in the canvases, lines from Shakespeare, as spoken through Hamlet’s existential monologue come to mind – the magnificence and fallibility of humanity encapsulated in verse:

“What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason!
how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how
express and admirable! in action how like an angel!
in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the
world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me,
what is this quintessence of dust?”

<text>CPU is Bar exam testing center; Treñas forms coordinating team
By Panay News -Saturday, August 17, 2024

BY GEROME DALIPE IV

ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas has created a coordinating team that will establish protocols and manage this year’s Bar Examinations in this metropolis.

Treñas signed Executive Order No. 113 to create the team tasked to ensure the successful and efficient holding of the Bar exams at the Central Philippine University, one of 13 testing centers across the country.

“To ensure the successful and efficient implementation of the 2024 Bar Examinations at Central Philippine University, there is a need to create the Coordinating Team for the Iloilo site,” read Treñas’ order.

The Supreme Court (SC) has designated CPU as a local testing center (LTC) for 2024 Bar Examinations on Sept. 8, 11, and 15.

In Bar Bulletin No. 3-B, the SC said there will be six LTCs in the National Capital Region (NCR), two in Luzon, three in the Visayas, and two in Mindanao.

“The social and economic benefits of providing regional sites for the examinations cannot be overemphasized. This innovation reduced the logistical, financial, and emotional burdens of bar candidates from the provinces,” said Associate Justice Mario Lopez, 2024 Bar exam chairperson, in a statement.

A total of 12,246 law graduates have applied to take three-day Bar exams in 13 local testing sites across the country.

The high court identified two other testing centers in the Visayas – University of San Jose-Recoletos in Cebu City and Dr. V. Orestes Romualdez Educational Foundation in Tacloban City.

Mayor Treñas earlier said he was glad that the Supreme Court had designated CPU as the local testing center in Iloilo City for this year’s Bar exam.

“With three law schools in the city and four more in Region VI, having a testing center here will significantly enhance convenience and reduce costs for the examinees,” said Treñas.

The mayor wrote Associate Justice Ramon Paul I. Hernando, the chief of the 2023 Bar Examinations, that Western Visayas, particularly Iloilo City, has proven its capability as testing centers when hundreds of barristers trooped CPU during the 2020-2021 Bar exam.

He noted that Western Visayas has seven law schools – Aklan College in Aklan; Colegio de La Purisima Concepcion in Capiz; University of Negros Occidental Recoletos and University of St. La Salle in Bacolod; and CPU, University of San Agustin and West Visayas State University in Iloilo City.

“Iloilo City is the home of three law schools and very accessible to the graduates of the four others in Region VI,” said Treñas.

Under Treñas’ executive order, the monitoring team will be composed of external and area security committee, traffic management and barangay coordination, health and disaster risk management, and public information and social media.

The external and area security committee will be responsible for the overall external and area security during the entire duration of the Bar examinations, including the holding of the bar operations.

The traffic management and barangay coordination team will prepare the traffic route plan around CPU relative to the road closure around the perimeter of the testing site.

The health and disaster risk management team will ensure that health protocols and policies are adopted and implemented during the Bar exams.

On the other hand, the public information and social media team ensure that information on the Bar exams as well as the specified road closures, and share relevant information from the Supreme Court relative to the development of the exams./PN

<text>Cracks on parapet walls superficial, Ungka flyover remains safe – DPWH

By Ime Sornito -Monday, July 29, 2024

ILOILO City – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 6 assured the public that the Ungka Flyover, located in Barangay Ungka II, Pavia, Iloilo, remains safe for light vehicles and commuters despite the detection of superficial cracks in the structure’s parapet walls.

Engr. Sonny Boy Oropel, the regional director, said the cracks were superficial.

Still, he said ongoing remedial measures are being implemented to maintain safety.

Oropel said Monolithic Construction & Concrete Products, Inc., the contractor currently performing jet grouting repair works on the flyover, has been instructed to remove any parts of the parapet wall where cracks appear to prevent debris from falling.

Additionally, DPWH-6 plans to install safety nets around piers 9, 10, 4, 5, and 6 to catch any potential debris and protect the traffic and pedestrians below.

An inspection last week revealed the extent of the cracks. Jet grouting and vibrations from traffic have led to their development.

The Ungka flyover is undergoing jet grouting repair due to vertical displacement at its piers 4, 5, and 6.

“We have made necessary adjustments to correct these issues, and we are closely monitoring the situation with our contractor to ensure safety. I assure all commuters and the public that the flyover is still safe for light vehicles, and we will promptly restore any affected parts of the parapet wall following the jet grouting process,” said Oropel.

DPWH-6 is currently 72 percent through with Phase 1 of the jet grouting, aiming to complete it by the end of August 2024. Plans for a bidding process for the next phase are set for the same month, focusing on the affected piers.

Engr. Adam Abinales of Abinales Associates Engineers + Consultants recommended installing additional bored piles at piers 4, 5, and 6 to further stabilize the structure. This process may require the removal and replacement of existing pre-stressed concrete girders to accommodate the large equipment needed for drilling.

Abinales advised that the additional piles should extend up to a depth of at least 40 meters, compared to the current depth of 26 to 28 meters at the affected piers.</text>

<text>The Philippines has become one of the fastest-growing digital economies in Southeast Asia due to the emergence of information and communications technologies (ICTs) that have facilitated digital transformation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This transformation has led to the development of new business models, innovative products and services, and new ways to conduct business. Utilizing digital technologies effectively can help the country improve its economic performance and promote inclusive and sustainable development. However, the ability of the Philippines to take full advantage of the vast opportunities provided by these technologies is contingent on reducing the digital divide and addressing policy issues.

To obtain a better understanding of the digital economy, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies has compiled research on the current ICT environment, including issues related to e-commerce, financial technology, online and platform work, smart cities, digital connectivity, and gender. In this volume, PIDS researchers explore strategies for leveraging digital technologies to achieve inclusive socioeconomic development.

The Institute aspires that the analyses in this book will inform discussions and the national strategic direction on seizing opportunities and addressing challenges in the digital sector to enable the Philippines reach its full potential as a frontrunner in the digital economy.</text>
