ILOILO – Pavia National High School was the focal point of two major educational initiatives on July 5 – the groundbreaking ceremony for new school buildings worth P195.25 million and the distribution of P10,000 in educational assistance by the Uswag Ilonggo party-list.

The Uswag Ilonggo’s Cong. James “Jojo” Ang, in collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Education, is addressing the critical shortage of classrooms.

The P195.25-million investment in education will fund the construction of three new school buildings at Pavia National High School, providing 50 new classrooms and an auditorium.

Schools Division Superintendent of Iloilo, Ernesto Servillon Jr., emphasized the impact of this project: “Cong. Jojo Ang’s support from Uswag Ilonggo is very significant because he augmented our resources. This made it easier for our governor, existing regular congressmen, and mayors to help us provide classrooms.”

He added: “The problem of classroom shortages is gradually being solved, and this gives me peace of mind as the schools superintendent.”

Details of New Classroom Buildings

* Building 1 – 3 storeys, 6 classrooms, costing P23,500,000

* Building 2 – 4 storeys, 20 classrooms, costing P76,750,000

* Building 3 – 5 storeys, 24 classrooms and one auditorium, costing P95,000,000

Congressman Ang reiterated his commitment to education: “One of our problems in education is the shortage of classrooms for our children, which is necessary for a comfortable learning environment and to accommodate more students in our public schools.”

“We will solve this problem by building three new school buildings worth P195.25 million for 50 classrooms and one auditorium at Pavia National High School. This is our way to help the Department of Education solve this long-standing issue in our schools.”

In addition to the groundbreaking ceremony, Uswag Ilonggo party-list distributed P10,000 in educational assistance to each of 476 scholars, ensuring they receive continuous support throughout their academic journey until graduation.

Key officials and stakeholders attending the ceremony included Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel of the Department of Public Works and Highways – Region 6, Cong. Mike Gorriceta of Iloilo’s 2nd District, Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., and Principal IV Lourdes Montefrio of Pavia National High School.

Mayors from Pavia (Luigi Gorriceta), Santa Barbara (Dennis Superficial), Zarraga (Jofel Soldevilla), Leganes (Jun-jun Jaen), and New Lucena (Liecel Seville), along with Pavia Sangguniang Bayan members and Pavia barangay officials, were also present.

Congressman Gorriceta highlighted the importance of the financial assistance: “It is a great help to every family. Enrollment is near, and some have already started enrolling, so they can focus on their studies. They no longer have to look for money to pay for their miscellaneous fees or other expenses.”

He added: “Education is very important. With our partnership with SDS (Schools Division Superintendent, Mayor Luigi (Gorriceta), and our principals, it is wonderful because everyone helps, not just the mayor and congressman. We are fortunate to have our partner, Uswag Ilonggo.”/PN

              <text>Iloilo intensifies dengue awareness drive with ASEAN Dengue Day event
By Panay News -Tuesday, June 18, 2024
QUIÑON
QUIÑON

ILOILO – As the province grapples with a surge in dengue infections, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) is hosting the ASEAN Dengue Day at Casa Real de Iloilo today to heighten community awareness on the disease.

Over 1,000 dengue cases have already been recorded across the province, including four fatalities and several clustering instances in various barangays, according to IPHO head Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon.

“The increasing mosquito population due to the rainy season further necessitates greater community vigilance,” Quiñon told Panay News.

Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, causing severe flu-like symptoms and, in extreme cases, death.
Symptoms include a sudden high fever, severe headache, nausea or persistent vomiting, swollen glands, muscle and joint pain, pain behind the eyes, and red spots or patches on the skin.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. will spearhead the ASEAN Dengue Day observance, with the attendance of dengue program coordinators from 43 local government units across Iloilo.

A special invite has also been extended to Amalia Victoria Debuque, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay – Iloilo Provincial Chapter, to discuss the role of barangays in the Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD) initiative.

Dr. Quiñon stressed the importance of comprehensive community involvement and the active role of barangay officials in implementing the 4S strategy against dengue, which includes searching and destroying mosquito-breeding sites, adopting self-protection measures, seeking early treatment, and supporting targeted fogging and spraying in hotspot areas.

The event will also feature talks on dengue prevention myths and facts by a Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist from the Philippine Pediatric Society, and a presentation on the “Limpyo Iloilo” program by Mitzo Peñaflorida, a senior environmental management specialist.

As of June 8, the province has logged 1,110 dengue cases, with the highest numbers reported in Lambunao (77 cases, one death), Oton (59), Calinog (58), Passi City (58), Miag-ao (52 cases with two deaths), Badiangan (48 cases with one death), Lemery (45), Estancia (40), Dumangas (36), and Sara (32).

The province also identified one hotspot barangay in Badiangan town (Odiongan) with 13 cases and noted clustering of cases (three or more) in five other barangays:

* Astorga, Badiangan – three
* Libertad, Banate – six
* Datagan, Calinog – three
* Jamin-ay, Calinog – three
* Tabugon, Dingle – six/PN

              <text>Lúthang could become the word of the year, capturing the essence of the new poetry collection by Tomasito T. Talledo in Hiligaynon-Karay-a. Throughout the collection, the poet’s nuanced interpretations of this word stand out, serving as a compass for his poetics in crafting the work. These interpretations guide the reader to reimagine reality and explore the multifaceted impact of lúthang in both the figurative and literal mapping of violence and the recollection of past and present memories.

The collection is divided into four parts, including Taguangkan, Binugrasan, Kaadlawan, and Binugsukan, encompassing a total of 25 poems. Notably, Talledo’s work can be classified as protest poetry, a significant literary tradition in the country that harnesses the power of language to engage with national issues. This tradition places particular emphasis on advocating for the rights of citizens and the marginalized poor, who are often overlooked in mainstream discourse.

The writer sought to politicize his personal understanding of society to make it more impactful and beneficial for readers, whether they are activists or not. This intention is evident from the very first part of the collection, featuring poems such as Iloilo ang Banwa Ko, Ilongga, s’ya bala?, Dinagyang na naman, Panghangkat sang Bakunawa, and Panambi sang Tumandok. These works reflect a deep engagement with social issues and invite readers to consider the broader political and cultural context. At first glance, these poems may appear to be straightforward commentaries on discrimination and the state’s exploitation of its citizens. However, a deeper reading reveals them as powerful reminders and challenges, urging readers to trust in the power of words and the importance of memories.

Aside from holding a deep respect for the power of words and the significance of memory in preventing forgetfulness, Talledo also acknowledges and raises his fist in solidarity with his allies, especially women. He particularly honors his mother, who displayed steadfast courage in engaging in the people’s struggle. This reverence is vividly expressed in the second collection of his poems, including Tigadluman, Negros, Sa Imo Kaadlawan Judy Taguiwalo, Saulogon ang Imo Kaadlawan Ma. Luisa Posa-Dominado, and Nanay. These poems do more than just offer praise; they amplify the resonant echoes of history, underscoring the vital role of women and our mothers in triumphing over an oppressive system that persistently attempts to bury our struggles into oblivion. Through his work, Talledo reinforces the importance of remembering and honoring these essential figures in our ongoing fight for justice.

In the third part of the collection, Talledo masterfully weaves together elements of protest and folk literature. He underscores the significance of activism, protest, and marching for our causes in poems such as Halad sa Kaadlawan, Amba ni Andres kay Waling-waling, Alimukon nga Pispis si Gina Lopez, Saging, and Hurubaton. These poems highlight the importance of collective action and the enduring spirit of resistance. Consider, for example, these powerful lines: Bonifacio, Luna, Mabini: mga halad / Sa rebolusyon nga nagapadayon / Subong, magaatubang sa Bulutlakan / Ang ila matadlong nga mga panulok / Walay pangalag-ag, walay kahadluk / Buhi sa dughan kag utok sang tanan / Ang martsa padulong sa kadalag-an!

The final and fourth part of the collection is divided into two sections, Binalay ni Bulalakaw and Padayon. These sections emphasize the significant contributions of individuals such as Valeriano Caro, Nilo Arado, Luisa Posa-Dominado, Ka Tingting, Rowena Torrato, and Komander Posa—victims of the fascist state. The persistent mention of their names throughout the collection serves to revive their memory, reminding the public of their crucial roles in the genuine liberation of the nation from an oppressive regime. This system continues to suppress the populace and inflict widespread suffering. For the poet, the revolution persists, and the lives of those who have fallen continue to resonate through the collective unity of people. Like Talledo, he remains steadfast, wielding his strength, language, and memory to sustain the struggle until justice is finally attained.

Through these poems, Talledo not only pays homage to the martyrs but also perpetuates their enduring legacy, igniting a flame of inspiration in future generations to persist in the struggle against tyranny. The collection serves as a reminder that the quest for freedom is perpetual, and the valorous sacrifices of these individuals must remain etched in our collective memory for generations to come.

Talledo is no coward, making it entirely fitting that he published his second collection of poems independently. It is fitting that it remains untranslated into English, preserving its authenticity. It is fitting that he compiled and transformed it into a book, granting us access to his profound brilliance. Through this act, Talledo demonstrates that beyond his roles as an activist and writer, he holds a deep respect for independent publishing. This choice empowers us, as readers, to recognize that the success and any changes we aspire for in the future of our country are firmly within our grasp.

The process of writing, gathering, and publishing this project is truly commendable. In the foreword of the book, Talledo declares that this work is his response to the challenge of writing in his language. The poet powerfully reminds us that the language of the masses will liberate the masses. Like Rio Roja, Servando Magbanua, and Mayamor, we do not need to be included in the Palanca, nor should we be bound or blinded by awards and money. True poetry and the act of writing poetry demand engagement that transcends the mere act of writing itself.

Talledo’s voice is indispensable in the field of creative writing, particularly in the discipline of crafting contemporary protest poetry. His understanding of the concept of protest goes beyond mere writing jargon; for him, the struggle must be lived, deeply integrated into our everyday lives, and inseparable from the essence of existence—a truth that resounds profoundly throughout his collection.

Beyond being example of protest poetry, Talledo’s collection is a reflection of his own life as a professor and activist writer. He is not just a poet confined to his words; he is an active presence in the streets, continuously engaging in actions that many of us find daunting. This commitment is vividly echoed in his work, infusing his poetry with the very spirit of activism. Through his poems, Talledo becomes a living embodiment of the struggle, illustrating that poetry transcends mere words—it is a lived experience, an intrinsic part of daily existence.

              <text>Yunar, the Hiligaynon word for birthmark, usually evokes nuances of identity, origin, and distinctiveness, something akin to our zodiac signs, which supposedly mirror our personality, fortune, and fate.

In this recent collection of works of Ilonggo artist, Leoniel “Sabrec” Cerbas, archetypal images are put together to reflect these astrological signs. Currently displayed on the walls of Museo Iloilo, the viewer of the artwork is drawn to its cursory form, design, color, texture, and overall aesthetics. However, as you move closer and take another look, the artwork reveals its hidden beauty: the symmetries, proportionality, balance, and order which project the narrative behind Sabrec’s brushstrokes.

The mathematics behind the brushstrokes

Growing up in the slums of Iloilo, Sabrec witnessed the struggles and difficulties of ordinary individuals who have to survive on a daily basis. These realities pushed him to express his thoughts and emotions through his artworks.

Most striking about his artworks perhaps is the incorporation and emphasis on geometric figures that reveal a mathematical adeptness in the reiteration of figures. The connection of art and mathematics in the works of Sabrec exudes deeper meanings and projects structures that showcase the beauty of art not only in its form and color but also in its order and proportion. This combination of mathematics and art creates a profound depth and structure that goes beyond mere aesthetics.

Crustacean curvatures

Let us consider one of Sabrec’s artworks from the series. Entitled ‘Cancer’, an obvious reference to the Crab, the piece exhibits a sense of bilateral symmetry, with the central axis running vertically through the center of the canvas. This is reinforced by the mirrored positioning of what seems to be statues of Neptune on both sides of the painting and by the symmetrical arrangement of the crustacean’s claws, albeit varied in dimension. A looming moon at the background further highlights this symmetry.

Numerous circles and curved lines dominate the artwork. The moon and the crab’s body form primary circular shapes, while additional smaller circles and curves overlap the scene, which creates concentric and intersecting arcs. Meanwhile, triangular forms are also subtly integrated in the painting, particularly through the connections of golden lines that overlay the image. These shapes add a layer of geometric complexity to the artwork.

More so, the distribution of the painting’s elements along the golden lines suggests a proportionality that contributes to the harmonious balance of the artwork. Also, the varying scales of elements, from the large central figure of the crab to the smaller statues and intricate details, establish a visual hierarchy. This scale draws attention to the central figures, which emphasizes them as the main subjects of the piece.

Furthermore, the painting features dynamic lines that create a sense of movement. These lines that are formed from the claws of the crab and the directions in which the statues face, converge and diverge, thus directing the viewer’s eye throughout the painting. Additionally, the intersecting golden lines, the outlines of the crab, and the positioning of the statues create numerous points of intersections that provide the viewer with a rich visual experience.

*****

Perhaps to bridge aesthetics and pedagogy, these geometric figures and concepts that can be seen in the paintings of Sabrec may be used as content for classroom instruction. In this way, teachers can integrate mathematics and art for a meaningful learning experience for students who have difficulty in understanding math-related subjects and finding its relevance to real life. Through this pedagogical approach, students may develop passion and enthusiasm towards art, as well as improve their critical thinking skills in analyzing geometrical concepts behind any artwork.

All in all, Sabrec’s artworks transcend mere artistry: it delves into the meaningful concepts behind the canvas. Inspired by the idea of yunar, he formulates his own destiny instead of relying on his fate as the stars would dictate. And as evidenced by his artworks, he masterfully creates with complexities, vibrances, and intricacies that make his paintings stand out.

However, as you move closer and take another look, the artwork reveals its hidden beauty: the symmetries, proportionality, balance, and order which project the narrative behind Sabrec’s brushstrokes.</text>

              <text>Galing Pook Award Marker presented to Iloilo province
February 29, 2024

The Galing Pook Foundation officially turned over the Galing Pook Award Marker to the Iloilo provincial government on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at SM City Iloilo’s event center.
By Mariela Angella Oladive

On February 28, the Galing Pook Foundation ceremoniously handed the distinguished Galing Pook Award Marker to the Iloilo provincial government during an event at SM City Iloilo’s main mall event center.

This award is a testament to Iloilo’s exceptional execution of the Zero Open Defecation (ZOD) initiative, highlighting a crucial advancement in sustainable sanitation practices within the region.

The ceremony, underscored by the Galing Pook Foundation Chairperson Mel Senen Sarmiento and SM Prime Holdings Consultant for Disaster Risk Resilience Alexander Pama, celebrated the collective commitment and effort from various contributing parties.

Notable attendees included Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director Juan Jovian Ingeniero, DILG Provincial Director Carmelo Orbista, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, Board Member June Mondejar, and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon.

Sarmiento lauded Governor “Toto” Defensor’s steadfast leadership and the successful realization of the ZOD program, recognizing Iloilo as the first province in Western Visayas to secure the Zero Open Defecation (ZOD) Grade 1 Status.

In 2023, the province’s initiative, “Zero to Limpyo Iloilo: Movement for a Province-wide ZOD,” was honored as one of the 10 Galing Pook Awardees.

“What we need in government are passionate people. I firmly believe that if you are passionate, you innovate, and when you innovate, you excel; when you excel, you succeed, and that’s what Governor ‘Toto’ Defensor and the rest of the team in Iloilo Province showed to everyone,” Sarmiento said during the event.

He also extolled Iloilo’s triumph in securing the Galing Pook, comparing it to the “Oscar Awards” for local government and emphasizing its status as the “toughest” governance award for LGUs to attain.

Defensor Jr., in his address, expressed his appreciation for the accolade, describing the Galing Pook Award as emblematic of a broader vision for local governance.

“More than an award, the Galing Pook is a perspective; it is a way of looking at, treating, and assessing community engagement, innovation, impact, programs, and projects of local government units. It gives us the standards that we can use in leveling up our work, our other programs, and projects as well,” he noted.

The event also introduced the “Galing Pook @30 exhibit,” a celebration of thirty years of exemplary local governance initiatives.

In partnership with SM Prime and the DILG-Local Government Academy, the exhibition highlights the 10 Outstanding Local Governance Programs from the 2023 Galing Pook Awards and is available to the public until March 7 at SM City Iloilo’s lower ground floor.

Additionally, the 2023 Galing Pook Awards will be featured in screenings at SM City Cinemas, reflecting the company’s commitment to bolstering disaster resilience.</text>

Iloilo City is gearing up for its inaugural “Festival of Food,” aiming to cement its reputation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

The gastronomic celebration, set for April 26–30 this year, was announced by the Iloilo City Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) Center, headed by Director Salvador D. Sarabia Jr., during a press briefing on Tuesday, February 27.

This event is poised to position Iloilo City as the culinary heart of the Philippines.

“The first-ever festival of food promises to be a feast for the senses, highlighting the finest of Ilonggo cuisine. Attendees can expect a broad spectrum of gastronomic encounters, ranging from heritage dishes to contemporary offerings that underscore our region’s distinctive tastes and produce,” Sarabia said.

He praised the unwavering commitment of the local food sector and government entities in attaining the esteemed UNESCO title, recognizing their culinary passion as the key to Iloilo’s gastronomic fame.

The festival will feature daily culinary innovations and tastings of Ilonggo specialties, crafted by the city’s chefs.

Dr. Tina Sudario, a participating Iloilo City Community College faculty member, stressed the significance of local municipality involvement in maintaining Iloilo City’s ‘Gastronomy City’ designation, as well as the vital contribution of local agriculture to the city’s food supply.

Sudario noted that Iloilo province is the primary source for ingredients that make up the city’s delightful fare.

In addition to sampling exquisite dishes, attendees will enjoy cooking demonstrations by local chefs, who will impart their knowledge for replicating genuine Ilonggo tastes.

The festival also promises symposia on various topics, including traditional cooking techniques, sourcing, marketing, packaging, and flavor pairing.

Furthermore, a food map, developed in collaboration with the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Arts, will debut during the festival to direct gastronomes to the city’s top culinary delights.

Meanwhile, there is a push for an ordinance to establish the Iloilo City Gastronomy and Food Industry Development Council.

This legislation is designed to foster the growth and recognition of Ilonggo gastronomy.

It underscores the need for a unified effort from the City Government, the private sector, and stakeholders to realize sustainable gastronomic development and distinction.

              <text>Iloilo province declares state of calamity due to El Niño
By Ime Sornito -Wednesday, May 15, 2024

ILOILO – This province has officially been placed under a state of calamity due to the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) approved yesterday the recommendation for such a declaration proposed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) led by Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.

However, the SP deferred acting on the recommended reprogramming of the PDRRM Trust Fund of 2022 to 2023. A committee hearing will instead be held later this week, to be chaired by SP member Rolando Distura, to review proposed budgets for mitigating, response, and recovery measures to be implemented by the Provincial Agriculture Office (PaGRO), Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO), Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), and the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Vice Gov. Christine Garin, the SP presiding officer, suggested to PDRRMO head Cornelio Salinas that the mitigation measures include immediate assistance to those directly affected by El Niño, such as cash assistance or cash-for-work programs, in addition to long-term solutions.

“People seem to need money the most right now,” Garin noted, emphasizing the immediate needs for food, water, and cash assistance.

The provincial government requested P110,780,000 to fund a series of mitigation, response, and recovery measures aimed at minimizing the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on residents. Here’s the breakdown:

* Crop Insurance Assistance to Affected Farmers and Fisherfolks – P10 million

* Construction of small water impounding and irrigation projects – P40 million

Environmental (P35 million)

* Construction of large-scale system (aboveground and underground) – P20 million

              <text>36 Iloilo towns report cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease
By Ime Sornito -Thursday, April 11, 2024
QUIÑON
QUIÑON

ILOILO – A number of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) cases has been reported in the province, with 36 of its 43 towns, including Passi City, affected from January to March this year.

According to the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO), the towns of Alimodian, Dingle, Dueñas, Estancia, Pavia, San Enrique, and San Miguel have not reported any cases of HFMD during this period.

HFMD is a contagious viral infection most commonly seen in young children, characterized by sores in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet.

The current cases, however, mark a significant decrease of 93 percent in cases, down to 219 from 3,278 cases during the same period in 2023.

The towns with the highest number of cases are Igbaras (27), Lambunao (18), Barotac Nuevo (15), Santa Barbara (14), Oton (14), Barotac Viejo (14), Banate (12), Maasin (12), Lemery (11), and San Dionisio (eight).

Additionally, 26 other towns, including Passi City, have reported cases, with numbers ranging from one to seven cases.

Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, chief of the IPHO, said majority of those affected are children, especially those in daycare and grade school levels, due to high risks of transmission through play and the sharing of commonly handled objects.

Parents are urged to be vigilant for early symptoms of HFMD and to seek excusal of their child from classes for seven to 10 days to prevent further spread.

Daycare centers are reminded to maintain high standards of sanitation, including frequent disinfection of surfaces such as doorknobs, tables, and chairs.

Quiñon attributes the significant reduction in HFMD cases this year to increased awareness and preventive measures, including campaigns, reminders, and advisories from the IPHO in collaboration with Municipal Health Offices.

These efforts focus on maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and the isolation of children showing signs and symptoms of HFMD.

HFMD symptoms can include fever, sore throat, general malaise, painful red blisters in the mouth, a red rash on the palms and soles (sometimes with blistering), irritability in infants and toddlers, and loss of appetite./PN

              <text>AFRICAN SWINE FEVER OUTBREAK: 10 Iloilo towns downgraded from red zone to pink zone
By Ime Sornito -Thursday, April 11, 2024

ILOILO – The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has downgraded 10 towns in the province of Iloilo from the red to the pink zone category due to improvements in controlling the African Swine Fever (ASF).

The towns now classified under the pink zone are Banate, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Concepcion, Dingle, Mina, New Lucena, Oton, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel.

In the red zone, strict prohibitions are enforced against the movement of live pigs, pork and pork products (including fresh/frozen pork and uncooked processed pork products, with the exception of cooked and canned processed pork products), as well as swine genetic materials, to prevent the spread of ASF. These restrictions remain in place until officially lifted.

The pink zone, or buffer zone, encompasses municipalities or cities where ASF has not been detected but are immediately adjacent to confirmed infected areas. This classification aims to prevent the overflow of ASF cases from the red zones through enhanced biosecurity measures and surveillance efforts.

In addition to the mentioned towns, five other municipalities are also slated for downgrading to the pink zone, namely Lambunao, Leganes, Janiuay, San Dionisio, and Zarraga.

According to Dr. Darel Tabuada, head of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), the successful downgrading of the 10 towns to the pink zone was due to no recorded cases of ASF in the last 40 days, the implementation of ASF ordinances, and the presence of trained biosecurity officers conducting regular surveillance and monitoring.

Previously, 27 towns were designated under red zones, including the recently downgraded towns.

The PVO and concerned local government units continue to monitor the remaining towns in the red zone with the goal of downgrading them to the pink zone.

This downgrade is crucial to allow areas to implement the sentinel program initiated by the Iloilo provincial government and the Department of Agriculture (DA).

A list of beneficiaries from the 10 newly classified pink zone towns who are ready to participate in the provincial government’s sentinel program has already been submitted. Upon validation of the beneficiary list, funds will be allocated to local government units for the purchase of sentinel pigs, with each beneficiary eligible to receive two sentinel pigs.

The sentinel program is expected to commence in May 2024.

Dr. Tabuada clarified that the provincial government’s sentinel program differs from that of the DA. Under DA’s program, beneficiaries are eligible to receive three pigs and a two-month supply of feeds, whereas the provincial program provides only two pigs without feed supply.

The health of sentinel pigs will be monitored through blood sample testing over two months to detect ASF infection. Positive results will lead to depopulation of the affected pigs, while negative results will allow hog raisers in the area to resume operations, provided they adhere to biosecurity measures.

According to PVO data, ASF has impacted 161 barangays in the province, affecting 2,213 farmers. A stark reduction in the swine population has been noted, from 277,421 heads of hogs before the ASF outbreak in September 2022 to 75,998 heads as of March 12, 2024, indicating a decrease of 201,551 heads or a sufficiency level of 33 percent.

Here’s a detailed inventory of swine across various towns in the province as of March 12, 2024: Oton (1,350), Santa Barbara (954), New Lucena (185), Leganes (26), San Miguel (680), Alimodian (3,156), Mina (252), Banate (188), Dumangas (69), Barotac Nuevo (13), Barotac Viejo (244), Badiangan (471), Zarraga (48), Janiuay (3,498), Dingle (1,152), Dueñas (1,092), San Dionisio (273), Batad (169), Concepcion (204), San Enrique (391), Estancia (170), Pototan (313), Maasin (1,242), Ajuy (30), Balasan (2,200), Lambunao (4,245), Carles (200), San Joaquin (3,178), Tigbauan (2,352), Leon(7,697), Cabatuan (1,968), Anilao (321), Pavia (843), San Rafael (384), Lemery (5,115), Sara (4,600), Tubungan (1,600), Guimbal (5,952), Calinog (6,240), Passi City (5,324), Miag-ao (3,977), Igbaras (1,034), and Bingawan (2,699)./PN
